Senior DevOps Engineer

We are recruiting for a Senior DevOps Engineer with a strong consulting background to join our client. You must be based in South Africa.

Our client works on important projects for global clients, delivering market-leading propositions across digital, online, and mobile channels. Recognized for their leadership in applying agile and lean delivery methods to assure delivery, they operate across an international network of offices in North America, Europe, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region.

This role goes beyond facilitating continuous delivery; we focus intensely on operational requirements to ensure software runs reliably in production. Drawing on extensive experience in DevOps and professional consulting, our engineers take on a hands-on, collaborative role, actively pairing with clients and internal teams to share knowledge, foster maturity around operability, and champion engineering excellence.

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will embed Test-Driven Development (TDD) and CI/CD pipelines into modern agile workflows. By enforcing robust unit testing and rapid feedback loops, you will deliver timely, pragmatic solutions while guiding stakeholders and client teams toward greater operational maturity.

Responsibilities of the Senior DevOps Engineer

  • Consulting and Leadership: Guide client stakeholders through strategic transformations, manage expectations, and provide technical leadership through expert mentoring and collaborative problem-solving.

  • Operability and Maintenance: Design and build infrastructure and pipelines with a strong focus on the customer’s long-term ability to support, maintain, and scale the software.

  • Agile Engineering and TDD: Champion modern agile practices, applying TDD and automated quality gates to ensure high code quality from inception.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Translate complex technical concepts into clear business insights for diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Adaptive Problem-Solving: Demonstrate strong troubleshooting capabilities and agility in dynamic client environments.

Required Skills of the Senior DevOps Engineer

  • Consulting Experience: Proven professional background in a technical consulting environment, demonstrating client-facing acumen, stakeholder management, and advisory expertise.

  • Collaboration and Pair Programming: Open and capable of pair or mob programming, working closely with cross-functional development teams.

  • TDD and Testing Expertise: Deep experience implementing TDD, comprehensive unit testing, and automated testing frameworks within the development lifecycle.

  • Software Development: Proficiency in at least one programming language, with the ability to build and test micro-services or automated tooling.

  • CI/CD Mastery: Strong technical background in build, release, and environment management, with hands-on expertise in CI/CD tools (such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, and GitHub Actions).

  • Continuous Delivery: Delivers small increments of work continuously, utilizing short feedback loops with the goal of seamless production deployment.

  • Branching and Version Control: Thorough understanding of branching strategies, maintaining clean workflows without over-engineering.

  • Systems and Infrastructure: Strong knowledge of Linux and/or Windows administration via the command line.

  • Cloud Computing: Solid understanding of major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) across functions, containers, and virtual machines.

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Familiarity with provisioning tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, Azure ARM, or Pulumi.

  • Telemetry and Observability: Proficiency in monitoring, graphing, alerting, and anomaly detection using tools such as Elastic, Grafana, Datadog, Sensu, or Prometheus.

  • Networking and Operations: Capable of network implementation, troubleshooting, and supporting robust software operations in production.

Must have:

  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in a similar Senior DevOps or consulting engineering position.
